Salome Sandovals Voice Graduate Recital Gods and Mortals Program notes Tonights performance consists of prologues in early Italian Operas and Spanish Baroque Zarzuela scenes. It was customary to have deity, gods or allegorical figures narrate or predict the characters actions and the story of the play. In the prologue to LOrfeo, Musica sings about the power of music over gods and mortals, such as Orpheus who attempts to rescue his lover Euridice from Hades, god of the underworld. Claudio Monteverdis premier of LOrfeo took place in the carnival of Mantua in 1607 and the score was first published in Venice two years after; even though this piece has been considered the first opera or sung drama for stage, its modern debut in Paris 1904 was in concert setting. The first one to perform this work with texts by Alessandro Striggio was the soprano-castrato Giovanni Magli. The choice of instrumentation is circumstantial, with the intention of preserving the essence of the ritornelli by having at least one wind instrument and one string instrument for the lead melodies. Translations: I come to you from the beloved Permesso, Oh great heroes, noblest race of kings; Fame sings your splendid qualities, but cannot do justice to your excellence. I am Music, and with sweet melodies, make peaceful every restless heart; and now, with noble anger, now with love, I can inflame the coldest minds. I sing to this, my golden lyre, alluring mortal ears so well that my melodious harmonies whet their desire for heaven's harps. Now do I wish to speak of Orpheus, who with his singing drew to him wild beasts, submitting even Hell unto his prayers, glory immortal of Pindo and Helicon. Now, while I sing songs both happy and sad, let not one bird dare move among these plants, nor should the wavelets sound upon these shores, and every breeze must halt upon its way.
